Low Cost Housing in Houston
Houston is a remarkable city that is known for the Houston Rockets and the Johnson Space Center. Houston is more affordable to live in than most big cities. This culturally diverse city also offers diversified housing options, as well, including expensive one-family homes (with plenty of low-income options), industrial urban lofts and a number of high-rise condominiums. In this article, we will discuss how this culturally diverse city offers several options for low cost housing.
Individuals who want to experience everything this great city has to offer should know that the closer to the city they are, the higher the rates will be. However, while any city has steep housing options, Houston (which is no exception) is also known for its affordable housing options. Several housing options in and around the city are affordable to individuals with all income levels.
There are several options for affordable housing in Houston. There are a large variety of smaller (one bedroom) apartments that are more affordable, houses or apartments that are already furnished, several cheap studio apartment options, plenty of options to live with a roommate to help cover the cost of rent and several programs designed to help low-income individuals and families, as well.
The city deemed 'The Big Heart' offers several great government-funded and non-government funded programs for individuals and families with low-income housing needs. For more information: visit the Housing and Community Development Department (HCDD) Website for the city of Houston. Houston's HCDD is run by federal funds and other funding to develop urban communities. The HCDD in Houston offers four programs:
1. Down payment assistance for single-family housing
2. Home repair assistance for single-families
3. Commercial housing development provides multi and single-family housing to individuals with housing needs.
4. Public services (HOPWA - services for individuals with AIDS and Houston Hope Homes - down payment assistance for volunteer-built eco-friendly homes).
Public housing in Houston is designed to meet the needs of individuals with low incomes and those who are disabled and/or elderly. Low-income housing is based on a sliding scale; therefore, individuals who make very little money can expect rent as little as $25 per month and typically, no more than $100 per month.
Public housing is limited therefore; individuals and families may have to wait a long time before housing becomes available. Therefore, it is important to call or visit the public housing authority in the Houston area to receive an application in order to get the process started. In order to qualify for low cost housing in Houston the total household income should be less than 30 to 50 percent of the median income. Therefore, this low-income housing program is not for individuals who are temporarily out of work, but rather for those individuals and families who are affected by a physical disability and have an issue that prevents them from being able to afford safe housing.
With all of the low-income housing opportunities in Houston, moving to this culturally diverse city can be easier than one might think.
