Housing Options in Washington, District of Columbia
There are plenty of great housing options in and around Washington DC. If you look on a map, Washington DC is a small square which is only about 70 square miles in total area. There’s a very good chance if you are planning to move to the DC area that you will find housing in either Virginia or Maryland.
Washington DC is the seat of government for the United States, and is an interesting combination of wealth and poverty. There are areas of DC with government subsidized housing and where the crime rate is greater than the other, wealthier sections of the city. There is a stark contract of the “have’s” and the “have-not’s”. This is all the more striking for the fact that it takes place in such a small amount of space and that it takes place at the heart of America’s government.
That being said there are plenty of great reasons to live in DC or in one of the DC suburbs which are a short commute to DC. The low-income housing areas of DC are fairly concentrated and there’s a convenient subway system for those who wish to live with reasonable rent and public transportation.
If a person is interested in housing “inside the beltway” as they say in DC, then there are plenty of great options and ways to find the right place for you. There are wealthy areas in the North West section of the city where there are apartments in private homes for rent. There are also apartment buildings where a person can rent for a moderate to high-price tag. There are the less desirable (from a standpoint of higher crime rates) neighborhoods in the South East and North East sections of DC where housing is cheaper.
If you are working for the government in some capacity, the beltway highway system provides a slow but reliable means of getting to work from any of the “outside the beltway” neighborhoods. These Virginia and Maryland suburbs are often more desirable for their lower rent and more neighborhood-like feel. For example, Rockville MD is a very nice and popular DC suburb with a lot of affordable housing.
Finding housing in the DC area is a matter of reading the online resources and following the leads in a prompt manner. If you see a place that you think is “perfect” for you, then you had better make efforts to secure it right away because the competition for good apartments is fierce.
The Nation’s Capital is a very interesting place to be. There is a never ending amount of culture to explore. The museums alone would keep a person busy for a lifetime. There is also the chance to see the government in action. Many of the Supreme Court cases are open to the public, for example.
When searching for housing in the DC area, decide first if you want to be inside or outside the beltway, and then be diligent and efficient in your efforts.
